I found a very interesting report today about the women who breastfed for more than a year reduce their risk of getting rheumatoid arthritis.
Such were the findings of a Swedish study, further saying that women who have kids but did not breast \fed have no protection against rheumatoid arthritis. More →

The arthritis drug Orencia has been approved as the treatment when all other treatments fail.
In the UK, after being ruled not cost effective The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), is bad news to all the people there (who has been under treatment with Orencia) with aggressive rheumatoid arthritis.
Such a ruling went down despite appeals by The National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) and Bristol-Myers Squibb — maker of Orencia (abatacept). More →

First it was Roche’s Actimra, now it is Abbott’s Humira that’s been approved in Japan.
The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has approved Humira for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in patients with inadequate response to conventional therapy.
“The approval of HUMIRA in Japan is a significant milestone for Abbott,” said Glenn Warner, vice president, Pharmaceuticals, Japan, Abbott. “This approval is both good news for Japanese patients and a significant step forward for Abbott in Japan.”

Roche Holding AG’s arthritis drug Actemra™ just won Japanese approval, which will then be sold by Roche’s Chugai unit.
Actemra is the first humanized interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor-inhibiting monoclonal antibody. An extensive clinical development program of five Phase III trials was designed to evaluate clinical findings of Actemra.
Four studies are completed and have reported meeting their primary endpoints. A fifth trial, a two-year study called LITHE (TociLIzumab safety and THE prevention of structural joint damage), is currently underway and is expected to report preliminary first-year data in 2008.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is is an autoimmune inflammatory disease affecting the patient systemically.
It is associated with progressive joint damage, pain, fatigue, and disability. Systemic-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SOJIA) is a more specific type of childhood diabetes with an unknown cause. Both conditions are related to the activity of the cytokine compound interleukin 6, which is involved in the activation of cells in the inflammatory response.

I have been on fish oil supplementation since (I think) the last half of October 2007.
I think I’ve mentioned that here, at least a couple of times. I felt the benefits right away, even before the beach/sand therapy worked on me.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes.
Since a gluten-free vegan diet is able to lower cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and oxidizedLDL (OxLDL), patients with RA who are on this diet are protected from such cardiovascular events. More →

As published in the open access journal Arthritis Research & Therapy, patients on prescribed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) medications could be at a reduced risk of heart attacks and stroke
Such were the findings of an international team of researchers led by Antonio Naranjo of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and colleagues in Argentina, Europe, and the USA — wherein the team looked into a study that included 4,363 patients from 48 sites in 15 countries and examined the causes and effects of rheumatoid arthritis, as well as the potential benefits of medications.

Forgive me for (sort of) neglecting this blog recently. Last week was my craziest week, not to mention that February is my craziest month!
Anyways, this month (March), I will try hard to keep this at the top of my long list.
Well, the only good thing for slacking on the job is that I have a lot lesser stress and thus, is good for my osteoarthritis. That doesn’t mean though that I didn’t think hard about arthritis in the past weeks. I always do!
